Fourth seat of the train and life. The Mumbai locals have enumerable stories to tell. There are so many aspects that can be explored and written but my favorite of all is the fourth seat. So, for a Mumbaikar this is a common term, but for those who don't know let me explain. Like Mumbai local train is called the lifeline of Mumbai, fourth seat is the ventilator, yes this is because when you get in the train and all seats are preoccupied you ask the person sitting on the third place to shift and the little place on the edge of the seat is The Fourth Seat.
The fourth seat has its own importance so much so that people even reserve it beforehand from those occupying it. So when you are kind of late or if the train is late or if yours is a middle station then most probably the fourth seat is what you get. More than a seat it is a mental satisfaction that you have a seat while others are standing.

But the person who has sat on the fourth seat knows what it means to be on an edge. Sometimes there is not enough space but you still adjust, the fourth seat teaches you to adjust to circumstances. And well at times it seems better to stand than to sit on the fourth seat but then if you get up you might lose the chance to shift to the third seat, so you simply chose to stay. Also discomfort is more felt when people have to go towards the door or when vendors with their products have to make a sale, you have to get up each time. Yet the hope of shifting towards the window seat helps you sustain all the distress.
The fourth seat of the train seems pretty much like the fourth seat of life, we all are apparently sitting on the little edge of our dreams. Trying to figure out a way to reach the window from where we see our dream view. And yet again adjustment on this seat of life is a must. No matter how many times we think of getting up from our seats, we fear someone else might take it and thus we choose to sit in discomfort for future comfort. Here also many people come and go and make you get up and distract you but still you chose to face them all with a bright beautiful smile. And yet again the hope of fulfilling your dream helps you sustain on the fourth seat of life.
The catch here is that no matter we may finally get the third, second or even window seat in the train but in life we are always on the fourth seat because the moment we shift to the third place, we realize our dream has also shifted one place and yet again we are on the fourth seat of life forever! And maybe that’s the thrill in life that always keeps us on the edge and motivates us to keep going.
So it's better to make peace with the fourth seat and enjoy it as long as the journey is on and we are moving ahead on our respective paths.
Comfort feels good, but discomfort keeps us going!
To all those on the fourth seat of their lives,
Happy Reading,
Until next time,
